چکیده

We introduce a variant of the classic node search game called LIFO-search where searchers are assigned different numbers. The additional rule is that a searcher can be removed only if no searchers of lower rank are in the graph at that moment. We show that all common variations of the game require the same number of searchers. We then introduce the notion of (directed) shelters in (di)graphs and prove a min–max theorem implying their equivalence to the cycle-rank/tree-depth parameter in (di)graphs. As (directed) shelters provide escape strategies for the fugitive, this implies that the LIFO-search game is monotone and that the LIFO-search parameter is equivalent to the one of cycle-rank/treedepth in (di)graphs. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. LIFO-Search on Digraphs: A Searching Game for Cycle-Rank

We consider the extension of the last-in-first-out graph searching game of Giannopoulou and Thilikos to digraphs. We show that all common variations of the game require the same number of searchers, and the minimal number of searchers required is one more than the cycle-rank of the digraph. We also obtain a tight duality theorem, giving a precise min-max characterization of obstructions for cyc...

A Theory of Game Trees, Based on Solution Trees

In this paper, a theory of game tree algorithms is presented, entirely based upon the concept of solution tree. Two types of solution trees are distinguished: max and min solution trees respectively. We show that a game tree algorithm actually constructs a superposition of a max and a min solution tree. For algorithms searching a game tree, a cutoo criterion is suitable. A cut-oo criterion in t...

The Bandwidth Heuristic Search

By placing various restrictions on the heuristic estimator it is possible to constrain the heuristic search process to fit specific needs. This paper introduces a new restriction upon the heuristic, called the "bandwidth" condition, that enables the ordered search to better cope with time and space difficulties. In particular, the effect of error within the heuristic is considered in detail. Be...

Admissibility in Opponent-Model Search

We start with showing experiments in the game Lines of Action (LOA) that hint at the existence of a large risk in using Opponent-Model (OM) search. Then the nature of the risk is investigated and its consequences are unveiled. It appears that, in contrast to Minimax, OM search is sometimes unable to repair large errors in the evaluation function(s). The result is that OM search, even when used ...

Efficient Sampling Method for Monte Carlo Tree Search Problem

We consider Monte Carlo tree search problem, a variant of Min-Max tree search problem where the score of each leaf is the expectation of some Bernoulli variables and not explicitly given but can be estimated through (random) playouts. The goal of this problem is, given a game tree and an oracle that returns an outcome of a playout, to find a child node of the root which attains an approximate m...
